Rediscovering Joy: The Business Trip
I had never been one for the corporate world. The smell of stale coffee and the incessant tapping of keyboards suffocated me. However, I found myself standing in front of a jet-black Town Car, my pulse jumped in my throat and my palms sweaty. Ethan had insisted that I accompany him on this business trip, and despite my initial reluctance, I couldn’t deny the thrill bubbling inside me. It was an adventure, even if it did involve boardrooms and briefcases.
As Ethan approached the car, his usual playful charm glinted in his eyes. In a crisp, tailored suit, he looked like he had just stepped out of a fashion magazine. I, on the other hand, had opted for a comfortably chic outfit—dark jeans paired with a flowy white blouse, thinking any ensemble would drown out the overwhelming aura of prestige that surrounded him.
“Ready for some excitement?” he asked, flashing that winning smile that still made my heart flutter.
“Excitement? Or corporate chaos?” I teased, nudging him playfully with my elbow.
“Same difference,” he winked, opening the car door for me. My cheeks heated up at his gallantry, but I still felt like a fish out of water.
As we drove to the airport, the city whizzed by, a blur of asphalt and blinking lights. The air inside the car felt charged, and despite the anxiety gnawing at me, I couldn’t help but steal glances at Ethan. He was focused, his jaw set in determination as he reviewed his notes. But every once in a while, he’d look over at me and smile, as if reassuring me that everything would be fine.
“Tell me more about this trip,” I said, trying to distract myself from my growing anxiety.
“It’s a conference for innovative startups,” he explained. “I’ll be speaking on a panel about business development. You’ll see me work my magic!”
“Work your magic, huh?” I raised an eyebrow. “Just how much magic are we talking here?”
He chuckled, a warm sound that settled my nerves a little. “Let’s just say, I have a few tricks up my sleeve. But mostly, I’m just going to charm them with my dazzling personality.”
“I see—business as usual,” I said with mock seriousness, rolling my eyes. “And here I thought I was special.”
“You are,” he said, glancing at me with a mix of sincerity and mischief. “Having you there will make it all the more... interesting.”
That sent a flutter through me. Was I really going to add some spice to his corporate life? The idea of him dazzling an audience with his charm, while I sat in the front row, filled me with a peculiar sense of pride and excitement.
When we arrived at the airport, the bright lights and hustle and bustle enveloped us. The soothing scent of brewing coffee wrapped around us like a warm hug. As I stepped into the terminal, I felt giddy, the world outside our usual routine momentarily vanishing.
“Let’s grab a quick coffee before we board,” Ethan suggested, leading me toward a quaint café that looked far too cute for such a bustling place.
As we waited for our drinks, I found himself marvel at how easy this felt—Ethan’s elbow brushed against mine, and the warmth sent delightful shivers through me. Everything felt light, right. The barista handed us our drinks, offering a complimentary pastry in a pink box because “love is in the air” or something equally cliché.
“Ethan, you and your charm! I see you have some even at airport cafés,” I laughed, taking a bite of the flaky pastry. Heaven melted on my tongue, the buttery sweetness mixed with a hint of vanilla.
He shrugged, a playful gleam in his eye. “It’s all part of the adventure. Besides, I wouldn’t want to take you into the business world without a little sugar.”
The taste was comforting, and as I munched, I felt lighter. I was really here—standing beside the man I’d unexpectedly fallen for, ready to embrace whatever chaos he called business life.
After a brief flight—where I marveled at the clouds and caught a glimpse of Ethan’s professional demeanor as he responded to emails—I tried to focus on my own whirlwind of thoughts. My heart raced with anticipation, and despite the pressure of being "the wife" in this corporate setting, a huge part of me was still eager for the adventure.
Once we landed in the city that vibrated with energy, I felt a buzz in the air. Ethan’s presence intensified that feeling; he exuded confidence as we made our way to the hotel. I matched his pace, even when I almost tripped over the luggage cart—as if the universe conspired to cushion my ego with embarrassment.
The lobby of the hotel was a spectacle of modern design: glossy marble floors, sleek furniture, and a chandelier that seemed to twinkle as if winking at me. Ethan checked us in like it was second nature, and I couldn’t ignore how effortlessly he fit into this world.
“Are you ready for glamorous dinners and meetings that have nothing to do with you?” he teased as we rode the elevator up to our suite. Despite my intention of appearing laid-back, I felt my stomach clench at the thought of being the outsider at business dinners.
“Glamorous dinners? You’ll have to give me a full report on those. In the meantime, I’ll try not to topple over any and all hors d'oeuvres,” I replied, trying to channel confidence.
He laughed, his laughter a soothing balm. “Just stick close to me, and you’ll be fine. I promise not to let you disappear in the crowd of suit jackets and power ties.”
The suite itself was lavish—large windows overlooking the skyline, plush furnishings, and a lingering scent of lemon and fresh linen that felt both refreshing and slightly intimidating. I sank onto the soft couch, the fabric melding around me, as I absorbed the atmosphere.
Ethan paced around, reviewing his notes while I studied him with a touch of curiosity. How did this ordinary man manage such an extraordinary life? I was constantly enchanted by the layers he revealed, little by little.
“Want to go for a quick walk before the chaos begins?” he called to me, breaking my reverie.
“Definitely!” I leapt up, eager to escape the plush confines temporarily. The city was calling, a vibrant realm waiting to be explored.
Once outside, the air was crisp and invigorating. The sounds of laughter and conversation from nearby restaurants beckoned us. “Let’s find somewhere we can grab a bite! I could definitely use more sugar,” I said, smirking.
“More pastries? You’re going to spoil me!” he teased back as he wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me close. The warmth of him ignited my every nerve.
The city streets were alive, bustling with energy. The smell of street food wafted through the air, tempting and tantalizing. I inhaled deep, eager to dive into the atmosphere. We passed food vendors, and my senses went into overdrive, each stall showcasing a mouthwatering array of treats.
“Have you ever tried a gourmet taco truck?” he asked, pulling me toward a vibrant truck decorated with colorful murals.
I made a face that said it all. “Gourmet tacos? From a truck? This I have to see!”
Inside, they served everything from classic carne asada to extravagant truffle-infused mushroom. The owner greeted us with a smile, and soon we were indulging in the deliciousness I’d never imagined possible from a taco truck.
With every bite, I delighted in the melty cheese and spice that danced on my taste buds. “This is amazing!” I exclaimed, glancing at Ethan who savored his taco with a look of pure bliss.
“I told you,” he grinned, wiping a drop of salsa from the corner of his mouth. “Nothing beats a good street taco.”
It felt so natural—like we were two pieces of a puzzle, interlocking perfectly amidst the flurry of industry and commerce around us. After we finished, I couldn’t resist stealing another quick kiss, feeling a rush of warmth radiate between us, but when I pulled away, I noticed something shifting in Ethan’s expression.
An imposing figure approached, another man in a well-fitted suit, determining and focused. My heart sank. Was this part of Ethan’s world? My mind was quick to spin theories, and the tightness in my chest returned.
Ethan’s demeanor shifted instantly. He straightened, a polite yet intense expression taking over his charming visage. “Isaac,” he greeted, shaking the man’s hand, but the joyfulness dimmed.
“Mr. Hawthorne,” Isaac replied, a slight edge underpinning his voice. something cold settled in my gut with unease.
Am I intruding on a world I barely understood? The lighthearted adventure felt distant now, as this stranger’s presence morphed the air from sugary sweet warmth into an icy draft.
“Luna, this is Isaac, one of the board members,” Ethan introduced, but I could sense the shift, the tension. “We were just grabbing a bite.”
“Nice to meet you,” I managed, trying to infuse some cheer into my voice. Isaac barely glanced at me, his eyes measuring Ethan as if determining a value. The camaraderie in the air cracked under the pressure.
What had begun as a simple outing had suddenly turned into something else—a stark reminder of the weight of Ethan’s life.
“Ethan, we need to discuss projections for the upcoming quarter,” Isaac continued, his tone clipped. “The board is starting to worry.”
Ethan nodded, but I could see the flicker of frustration in his eyes. “Let’s take care of it when we get back,” he said, his voice maintaining a professional edge.
“Whenever you're free,” Isaac said, darting a glance at me laced with disbelief. All of a sudden, I felt the part of the outsider again, unwelcome and unneeded.
“Actually, we were just about to head back,” I chimed in, even though I could sense Ethan wanting to stay longer. This wasn’t my scene—was it ever going to be?
“Now's a good time,” Ethan concurred, though I could see him wrestle with the disappointment of cutting the meeting short.
As we walked back, I felt the weight of Isaac’s eyes lingering behind us, like ice resting on my shoulders.
“I’m sorry about that,” Ethan finally said once we were out of earshot. “I didn’t expect him to be here.”
“It’s okay,” I replied, trying to shake off the unease gnawing at my insides. “Just business, right?”
He looked at me, his expression softening. “Don’t let it get to you. I like having you here. More than you know.”
The warmth was back, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that this corporate life was tugging us apart rather than drawing us closer. We continued walking in silence for a while, searching for what felt like an anchor amidst the storms of corporate pressures.
After navigating the ornate lobby, Ethan took my hand, grounding me. He exhaled, and I could sense the tension still radiating from him. “You know what? Let’s forget about the business for tonight. I want us to enjoy this trip together.”
“Absolutely,” I said, buoyed by the warmth of his fingers entwined with mine.
Over dinner that evening, we shared laughter and stories, our connection deepening as we rediscovered the uncomplicated joy we found in each other. The food was exquisite, each bite an explosion of flavor, but the real feast was in our shared laughter.
“I’m not completely useless,” I teased after I failed at using utensils to eat a lobster. “Besides, someone has to keep you grounded."
He raised his glass, a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. “To the grounded, then!” He took a sip of wine, his gaze unwavering, holding it like a secret between two conspirators.
But as the evening wore on, I couldn’t shake Isaac’s presence from my mind. I wanted to be part of Ethan’s world, but catching glimpses of the pressure that influenced his life felt daunting. Would I always be the fun-loving adventurer while he was entrenched in the corporate battlefield?
As we walked back to our suite, I took a deep breath, determination fueling my thoughts. I wouldn’t let Isaac’s disapproving gaze cloud our time together.
Just before we reached the door, Ethan paused, turning to me. “Luna, I want you to know—I’m so glad you’re here with me. You make everything brighter.”
The sincerity in his voice wrapped around me like a warm blanket, dissolving the unease bubbling beneath the surface. “And I’m glad to be here, learning about this whole other side of you.”
I leaned in, claiming my kiss, a tender moment that thawed away the chill of business talk and boardroom tension. Just as I was losing myself in the sweetness of his lips, a soft knock interrupted the serenity, freezing the moment in time.
My heart raced. What now?
But whether it was excitement, a new challenge, or jealousy brewing within, I knew one thing—whatever happened next might just change us both forever.
Tomorrow, everything would be different. She just didn’t know it yet.
