Signed, Sealed, Loved Ch 9/50

The Workplace Encounter

The cold breeze greeted me as I stepped into the office building, a stark contrast to the comforting warmth I had felt while wrapped in Alex’s arms just hours earlier. It was hard to believe the contrast between my home life and the corporate world I was about to enter. I took a deep breath, inhaling the faint scent of coffee and the sweet aroma of pastries from the kitchen, an instant reminder of why I loved this place.

But as I made my way to my desk, I spotted her—the queen of scheming and silent competition, Jessica Wilkins. She was standing by the coffee machine, her perfectly coiffed hair reflecting the fluorescent lights above. She turned as I approached, and for a brief, unholy moment, I hoped she would just ignore me. But no, of course not.

“Well, well, well,” Jessica said, leaning back against the counter with a smirk. “Emma, dear, you look positively glowing today. Did you finally figure out how to get past Alex’s walls?”

I tightened my grip on the folder clutched against my chest. “Just doing my best, Jess,” I shot back, my tone lighter than I felt. “You know, he’s surprisingly affectionate for a guy with so-called walls.”

Her laughter sliced through the air like a sharp knife. “Right. A 'contract marriage' you said? Sounds more like a business arrangement to me.” There it was—the skepticism, dripping like honey from her tongue.

I plastered on the biggest smile I could muster, wanting to show her how real my feelings were, even if Alex and I had barely scratched the surface. “And what do you know about real marriages? All that glitters is not gold, Jessica.”

She raised an eyebrow, clearly unfazed by my retort. “Just saying, a contract marriage can be cute until the paperwork gets tedious. I hope you’re ready for that.”

Moments like this were why I often left the office wearing my comical sarcasm like armor. “Just wait till you see our next family dinner! I’m sure my mom will wrangle up the paperwork in no time.”

Jessica rolled her eyes, and I couldn’t miss the tiny smirk creeping on her lips. “Well, good luck with that. Just remember that I’m right here, ready to pick up the pieces when it all comes crashing down.”

I shot her a withering glare and hurried away, because let’s face it—she wasn’t worth my time, especially not today. My heart felt heavier as I settled into my desk. The quiet hum of chatter around me was comforting yet slightly irksome.

But before I could even open my laptop and dive into my graphics work, the office phone rang, breaking the hum like a jarring alarm clock. I picked it up, but my attention was divided as I noticed Jessica sauntering back toward her desk, casting glances my way, as if she were inspecting a new pair of shoes.

As I spoke to the caller, I caught snippets of conversations around me. “Did you hear about Alex Thornton’s new project?”

“Yeah! Apparently, it’s going to be a game changer for the company.”

My heart skipped as I thought about Alex, wondering what he was up to. There was so much about him I didn’t know, and Jessica’s barbs were starting to hit a little closer to home.

I hung up, shaking my head as if to clear it. “Focus on the work, Emma. It’s a nine-to-five, not a soap opera,” I muttered under my breath.

But it seemed the universe had other plans. Not five minutes later, just as I settled in, I heard a commotion near the entrance of our office. The big glass doors swung open, and in strode a man in an impeccably tailored suit. He exuded an air of authority accompanied by an effortlessly charming smile, his presence immediately transforming the space.

“Oh goodness,” I whispered, practically glued to my seat. Everyone around me was already buzzing with curiosity.

“That’s Ryan Jennings!” someone exclaimed from the back of the room. “He’s one of Alex’s partners!”

My heart nearly dropped. Ryan Jennings was not just any partner; he was known for making deals that shifted the balance of the playing field. He was the cerebral counterpart to Alex’s charm. I could almost hear Jessica plotting a new strategy to grab Alex’s attention with him in the room.

Ryan walked toward the center of the office, his voice booming with confidence. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to share some thrilling updates on our next venture. We’re going all out, and I need your enthusiasm behind this project!”

As he spoke, my mind wandered. I could barely focus on his words; my thoughts kept darting back to Alex and the tension between us. But as Ryan’s speech continued, the mention of Alex’s name only intensified the bubbling jealousy within me.

“That’s right,” Ryan continued, “this project will showcase our innovative designs and strategies, and I’m excited for each of you to contribute. Let’s make this a memorable success!”

Memorable? More like anxiety-inducing. And speaking of memorable, I felt a nudge from my left. Jessica leaned over, her voice a coy whisper. “You should have seen how Alex looked last week when he mentioned getting partners involved.”

“Yeah? What about it?” I replied nonchalantly, though I could feel a tugging sensation in my gut.

“I mean, the way he said it, it sounded like he was looking for something—or someone—more…”

“More what?” I retorted, not even waiting for her to finish.

She shrugged, feigning casualness as she focused on Ryan’s ongoing speech. “You tell me, Emma. You’re the one on a ‘contract’ with him.”

If my face could glow any redder, I would’ve lit up the entire office. Was she really insinuating what I thought she was? I could feel my hands wouldn't stay still like it had just been chased by a particularly fast jogger.

“Anyway, let’s keep an eye on our precious ‘couple,’ shall we?” she trilled, practically giddy.

Before I could respond, the fire alarms shrieked through the office—an absolutely ridiculous sound that made chaos erupt. People rushed around, grabbing their belongings, and my emergency response instincts kicked in. I grabbed my handbag and scrambled for the door, only to realize that Jessica was already way ahead of me, leaving me to navigate through the throng of panicked coworkers.

As we all moved toward the exit, I looked back to see Ryan Jennings still standing calmly, his presence somehow managing to soothe the panic brewing in the air. Before I knew it, amid the noise and frantic movements, my eyes locked with his, and for a split second, it felt as if time stood still.

And then, right behind him, a familiar figure appeared—Alex, with that effortless smile on his face, striding toward me as if navigating the chaos was a simple stroll. My heart leaped. The blend of panic and confusion melted into warmth as I caught sight of him.

“Emma!” he called, his voice cutting through the pandemonium. “You okay? What’s happening?”

I darted toward him, and relief surged over me as I grasped his arm. “I think it’s probably a drill, but Jessica—”

“Let’s not talk about Jessica right now. Are you with me?” He gently pulled me closer, his eyes scanning the office like he was assessing a battlefield.

“Yes, I’m with you,” I said, I swallowed hard. “But Ryan—”

“Perfectly fine, I assure you,” Alex interrupted, a half-smile playing on his lips. “But you…stay close.”

Before I could respond, alarms still echoing, he took my hand, guiding me toward the exit where everyone was jostling to get out. A warmth spread through me, a feeling I couldn’t quite describe as we weaved through the throng.

But just as we reached the door, I glanced back at Jessica. She stood there, arms crossed, a look of smoldering determination on her face. A sudden wave of jealousy surged through me, but I pushed it away. The chaos was distant—Alex had me in his grip, and for now, everything else faded.

Then, as I turned back to him, I caught a flicker of something in his eyes, a hint of vulnerability masked behind that charming smile. And just as quickly, it was gone, replaced by the confident demeanor I’d grown to admire. What secrets lay behind those walls he had built?

All at once, I sensed that this wasn’t going to be just another ordinary day at the office.

The air crackled with unexpected tension, leaving me aching to know more and wanting to dive beneath the surface we both carefully maintained.

But before I could voice a question, Ryan Jennings approached, that confident glint in his eye, ready to shake things up, and just like that, my heart raced with anticipation.

This was only the beginning, and I could feel every thread of uncertainty tangling around my stomach like a curious little knot.

“Emma,” Ryan addressed, his tone shifting from business to casual. “I’m glad to see you. You do work with Thornton, don’t you?”

And just like that, with the question hanging heavily in the air, I realized this was going to spiral into something bigger than any of us had anticipated.

With each passing moment, it was becoming undeniable: the stakes were rising higher, and I was right in the middle of it. I squeezed Alex’s hand, knowing instinctively that whatever came next, I would face it armed with humor, a touch of bravery, and a sweltering curiosity.

And just when she thought she had it all figured out, life threw another curveball.
