Contracted Hearts: A Sweet Marriage Romance Ch 25/50

One Last Challenge

The scent of roses filled the air as I walked into the brightly lit ballroom, a flurry of activity buzzing around me. Today wasn’t just any day; it was the final countdown to my wedding. I could hardly believe it. Just a week ago, Jake and I had been tiptoeing around our feelings, and now we were on the brink of a ‘happily ever after.’ The ambiance was intoxicating, a familiar mix of excitement and nerves that I could hardly resist.

“Lily! You need to see this!” Megan called out, waving her hands wildly toward the entrance. I glanced over at the fluttering door curtains, a sheer veil that kept the outside world at bay. It took a moment for me to process what she was pointing at, and suddenly, my heart went from a gentle hum to a bewildered thump.

“Is that…”

“It absolutely is,” Megan confirmed, smirking as she nudged my arm.

Standing in the entryway, tall and striking, was none other than Lila Monroe, a long-lost name that made the hair stand up down my spine. Jake’s ex-girlfriend. The memory of her sleek black hair and bright red lipstick swarmed my thoughts, and I fought back a queasy rush. My stomach flip-flopped as I remembered how Jake had described her once: “An unstoppable force.”

“What’s she doing here?” I muttered, trying to maintain my composure.

“Maybe she’s here to crash the wedding,” Megan joked, but her laughter sounded nervous. I couldn’t share in her amusement. I clenched my fists, my knuckles turning white.

“She can’t crash our wedding! I won’t let her!”

I sprinted toward the entrance, my fingers went cold faster than my feet. I needed to intercept Lila before she became a problem, a pesky bump on our smooth road to marital bliss. The crowd parted for me as I neared her, a thick knot of people suddenly keenly interested in their drinks and conversations.

“Excuse me, Lila!” I called, my voice teetering between firm and shaky. The sight of her only intensified my growing insecurities. Why did Jake ever date her? She was gorgeous, confident, all the things I sometimes felt I wasn’t.

Lila turned, her vibrant smile not faltering one bit. “Lily! So lovely to see you again! Congratulations on the wedding; I’m sure it’s going to be beautiful.”

Her voice dripped with sweetness, but I could taste the bitterness beneath it. She approached, offering a quick hug, and although we were pressed together, I could sense the superiority radiating from her, the confidence of a woman who knew she had once been “the one.”

“Thanks, I—well, I hope you can find something else to do. A restaurant or a spa?” I suggested, forcing a tight smile. “This is a private event.”

“But I brought you a gift! It wouldn’t be polite for me to leave so soon, would it?” She flashed a dazzling smile that felt more like a dare than a kind gesture.

Jaked out a breath and clenched my jaw, feeling a sudden wave of protectiveness wash over me. “What gift?”

“Just a little token of my support,” she said, effortlessly flicking her hair over her shoulder. “You know, it’s hard to let go of old sentiments, even after all this time.”

something cold settled in my gut at her words. Was she implying what I thought she was? There was no way I’d let Lila stake a claim in my wedding plans.

“Lila,” I said, my voice steady even though my heart kicked loudly in my ears. “Jake has moved on. We’re getting married.”

“Oh, I understand that. But sometimes people think they’ve moved on, when, really…” She let her words linger, her gaze drifting momentarily past me, scanning the crowd. “What can I say? Love is complicated.”

Just then, Jake emerged from the throng of guests, his every step laced with familiarity and warmth. I hadn’t realized how much I needed to see him until he was there, that reassuring smile lighting up the space between us. But when I looked back at Lila, her smile held a hint of mischief that sent my resolve spiraling.

“Lily! There you are!” Jake exclaimed, his eyes lighting up at the sight of me. He was dressed impeccably in a tailored suit, the fabric hugging his shoulders just right. I could feel myself soften, caught in the comfort of his presence.

But Lila stepped right in front of him, blocking my view, her posture a little too casual. “Jake! Fancy running into you here! You remember me, right?”

The way she said his name sent a chill through me. I half-expected him to take a step back, but instead, he leaned toward her, his expression’s warmth not wavering. “Of course I do, Lila. How could I forget?”

I watched the two of them chat, the air thick with unspoken tension that I could almost taste. I turned my back to them, attempting to regroup my thoughts. I was a wedding planner, not a jealous bride! But it was impossible not to feel the little pangs of insecurity with a woman like Lila giving me a front-row seat to all my doubts.

“What’s your gift?” I interjected, snapping back to reality and crossing my arms defiantly. “I assume it’s not an invitation to run away with Jake or something?”

Jake looked startled, caught between defense and laughter, while Lila’s expression morphed into one of slight amusement.

“Lily, chill,” Jake said, an edge of concern in his voice.

“I’m not freaking out!” I insisted. I could taste the bitterness of regret on my tongue for how quickly I had snapped. “I just don’t want this to be about anything other than what it is!”

Lila merely smirked, her eyes sparkling with delight. “Oh, it’s all in good fun. I wouldn’t dream of trying to ruin your big day.”

“Thank you!” I shot back. “That’s very generous of you, especially coming from someone who seems eager to steal the spotlight!”

“Ladies, ladies!” Jake intervened, his hands raised in a playful gesture of surrender. “Let’s not make this a catfight. How about we focus on the celebration?”

“It’s not a catfight, Jake! I’m just saying that the only reason she could be here is to cause mischief,” I insisted, eyes level with Lila’s while she feigned innocence.

“Here’s a thought—why don’t we all just enjoy the party?” she suggested with a faux sweetness that could curdle milk. “After all, today is about love!”

“Absolutely,” I replied, a hint of fire igniting within me. “My love. The only love worth celebrating.”

Lila chuckled, taking a step back as if pausing to consider her next move. “Wow, we’re really going to do this, huh?”

“Do what?” I replied, tilting my head, refusing to back down. “Defend what’s mine?”

Feeling the tension ripple through the air, Jake shifted awkwardly, his eyes darting back and forth between us. “Why don’t I grab us some drinks?” he offered, waving a hand dismissively as he began to backpedal toward the buffet table.

“You know,” Lila called after him, “I’ll join you.”

I felt the heat rise in my chest like the first whiff of cinnamon rolls on a cold morning. “Jake! Wait!” I called out just as his shoulders drooped with a visible mix of exasperation and frustration.

“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure he gets something ‘special,’” Lila called before disappearing into the crowd.

I stood frozen for a moment before kicking into gear, narrowly avoiding swirling clusters of guests as I rushed after him. “Jake!” I called out again, catching up just as he reached the food table. He was rifling through platters with a frown on his handsome face, resisting the urge to end this before it even began.

“I think attending the wedding would be nice, don’t you?” I said, trying to lighten the moment but realizing my voice was tightening instead.

“I didn’t invite her, Lily,” Jake said, frustration marking his tone. “She just showed up.”

“She has a knack for showing up where she’s not wanted, huh?” I said, deciding to let a bit of sarcasm slip in.

His eyes softened, but they bore the weight of unsaid things. “You know I’m committed to you, right? All this—” he gestured back at the ballroom where Lila was standing, her gaze fixated on him, “it doesn’t mean a thing.”

“I know that,” I replied, crossing my arms protectively over my chest. “But her presence has a way of stirring up old... sentiments.”

“That was years ago!”

“‘Old sentiments’ don’t just disappear, Jake!”

He searched my eyes, a slightly pained expression crossing his features. “Are you saying you don’t trust me?”

My chest tightened, and a bitter taste invaded my mouth. “I want to!” I realized I was speaking too fast, but my emotions were bubbling up like a shaken soda bottle. “I just need to know that you don’t still have feelings for her!”

“Lily, her showing up doesn’t mean I have feelings,” he said, narrowing his eyes and holding my gaze. “You know I’m here now; you and me. You’re the only one I want.”

But something shifted in my gut, a squirming doubt that critiqued my every decision. “You sure about that?” I asked, my voice dropping low.

Suddenly, the room tightened around me, and I felt walls closing in. I didn’t want Lila’s presence to cast a shadow over everything I’d fought for—it was supposed to be so simple.

“Why don’t we just talk about this later?” Jake suggested cautiously, the warmth in his tone furtively retreating.

Everything felt heavy all at once. “Talk? What is there to talk about?”

I looked down, my breath catching as everything inside me churned uncomfortably. Our perfect wedding, our perfect relationship was drenched in a simmering storm. The idea of losing him felt unbearable, yet here I stood, wasting precious moments on old flames and insecurities.

“I can’t let her ruin what we have. I won’t!” I was angry now—not just at Lila but at myself.

“I’d never let that happen!” Jake stepped forward, reaching for my hand, the warmth of his grasp igniting the embers of hope that I tried so hard to keep at bay. “But we need to trust each other in this. You have to trust me.”

Trust. It was such a simple word, yet so complicated to implement. I yearned to relinquish my worries, to cast doubt into the void, but not today. Lila’s presence was like a dark cloud overshadowing the sun.

“I don’t know how,” I admitted, tears pricking at the corners of my eyes. “Seeing her just... I unearth too many insecurities.”

“Let’s talk it out, then? Just the two of us? No distractions?”

The softness in his voice wrapped around my heart, dulling the sharp edges of jealousy, reminding me of how much I adored him. Maybe this would bring clarity. I nodded slowly.

“Okay,” I agreed, breathing deeply to steady myself. “Just you and me.”

And just as I thought I had found my way back to solid ground, a muffled gasp erupted from the crowd. I turned sharply, finding Lila standing triumphantly with a small bouquet in her hands, a teasing smirk plastered across her face as she peered curiously at what I might say next.

“You can’t let me have all the fun, now can you?” she chimed, her voice floating through the air like a taunt, grasping everyone’s attention in a matter of seconds.

I felt the world start to spiral as she held the bouquet high, the mocking glances of our friends and family sharpening like knives. Curiosity lit their eyes, and I felt my control slipping through my fingers like sand.

“Maybe you’d consider a trade-off?” she suggested, an unmistakable glint in her gaze.

“What do you mean?” I asked, but even as I spoke, I felt the weight of her challenge hanging in the air.

Lila’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Maybe a little competition to spice things up!”

“Competition?” Jake echoed, confusion evident on his face.

“Oh yes, let’s see who really knows Jake the best!” she declared, her laughter ringing through the room, sending a ripple of unease skimming across my senses.

“All of us?” I asked hesitantly, feeling as if the words hit me somewhere behind the ribs into an abyss.

“No, just us!” she exclaimed, her eyes dancing with anticipation. “The winner gets Jake’s heart!”

A hush fell over the crowd as they absorbed her words, and every ounce of warmth I'd felt with Jake dwindled. All that remained was a chamber of brewing dread, and I suddenly realized where this was heading—a challenge that could either solidify or completely wreck everything we’d built.

Jake turned to me, concern pouring from his expression. “Do you want to do this?”

“I— I don’t know! It’s ridiculous!”

But even as the words left my mouth, I caught the hungry glint in Lila’s eyes, a tiny spark of competition fueling the fire inside me. I could see the cheers from our friends pooling around us, magnetic energy swirling in the air, but could I step into that ring and face off against her?

“Take a chance, Lily,” I heard Megan whisper in my ear. “Show her what you’re made of!”

Gazing back at Jake, I found my resolve slowly returning; this was more than just a test of pride—it was a test of love.

“Okay,” I finally surrendered, the back of my neck prickled as I locked my gaze on Lila. “Bring it on.”

And with that promise on the table, I had a feeling things were about to get complicated in a whole different way.

But the real test of their love was only just beginning.
